If you need to make changes to the partitions on your computer, there are several applications that provides various levels of functionality for accomplishing this goal. You can both create and delete partitions from your computer, even while there are other partitions on the hard drive you are modifying. You can also resize partitions if needed, to change how much space is allocated to them. Backup and Recovery
There are several backup and recovery tools on Hiren's BootCD. Backup tools like GetDataBack, HDD Scan, Partition Find and Mount, PhotoRec, Recuva, Undelete... let you copy data off of your hard drive and schedule automatic backups to ensure your data is saved to another location. There are also a few tools that will help you recover data from damaged or corrupted portions of your hard drive if you are unable to recover them through other methods. Testing Tools
Hiren's BootCD provides a variety of tools for testing different aspects of your computer. If you suspect that your RAM is corrupted or that a piece of hardware on your machine is not functioning properly, there are several applications you can run to determine the problems. Hiren's Boot CD 15.1 Latest Version Hi!
I installed Linux Mint on my external HDD. Worked fine. Booted Linux when external HDD was plugged in, Win7 when not. Unfortunately at one point Linux Mint updated its kernel headers and I suppose it made an update to Grub with this. = no boot to Win7 although all data was still there.
I tried a Win7 recovery cd image via USB-Stick (no cd drive available) = no windows found.
I tried bootrec, bootsect, but that did not help ('element not found').
There was a drive E: with 100mb which held a /boot folder.
C: (with win7 on it) did not.
I tried diskpart for activating partitions etc.
Nothing worked.
Someone suggested 'sudo update-grub' in linux mint (still worked if plugged in). That one found windows and it looked like it was making an entry for it (beneath diverse linux mint options).
Next restart brought only a grub-console, but no boot options. = no linux either now.
I restartet using USB-Win7 recovery. Now the 100mb partition is gone (I suppose thats ok, since I sat it to hidden+boot in gparted), all the drive letters are wildly assigned in diskpart and I do not know what to do now.
Thx for any help, Tommy
Linux has obviously grabbed complete control over your boot process. If you are going to fix this I have a feeling you'll have more luck on the linux forums than here.
Though I personally only deal with linux when I have too. It's possible some people here are different.
Yeah, I also posted there. But I do not suppose them to know how to repair the Win7 boot (wanna remove Linux, does not support my printer - and now it does not do anything anymore either)
hi there
look at this thread i posted in and go to POST 11 this may help you ok. Any way to keep GRUB boot loader from over taking windows?
you need to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) with a rescue disc have a look at brinks tutorial to save me typing it all in

UNPLUG THE DRIVE WITH LINUX ON
The first link maybe would have helped, but now I can only boot the Win7 recovery CD. No Linux, no Win7.
Second link: Recovery CD does not find Win7, so no automatic recovery is available.
bootrec /fixboot gives 'element not found'. scanos option finds the partition holding Win7 (actually D. But repairbcd option gives 'element not found'
Third link: there is no boot manager anymore. Just 'grub'. Console! No Grub-Menu.
my MBR in windows was destroyed when i was running kubuntu on another drive i used the repair disc and it fixed mine ok. and i was able to boot in to windows 7. my advice to every one installing linux when running windows 7 is DONT RUN IT WITH WUBI ON THE SAME DISC KEEP IT ON A SEPARATE DRIVE AWAY FROM WINDOWS. SO YOU CAN BOOT MANUALLY.
i think in your case you are going to need the windows 7 instillation disc or the one you make when you get the machine.

Dual Boot
Last but not least, MBRWizard provides functionality to help solve most issues caused by experimenting with Linux or dual boot scenarios, as well as providing assistance with repairing MBR partition entries after recovering a disk image or virus strike. homepage MBRWizard! - The MBR Management Utility
No, I do not want a complete Win7 reinstall. The data is still on the drive, although it is E: now. Thus it must be possible somehow to tell the machine to boot that? Because I do not have a CD-Drive. The (legal) Win7-image is on the HDD anyway, and so there is no way to bring it to an usb-stick again. (Did that for Win7 install from Win XP, but formatted the stick after installing).
Edit: wrote this before last post by you
i did not mean a re-install on the installation disc you can recover windows in a repair with it. brinks tutorials explain all this.
Advanced Boot Options
if you could get into the elevated cmd promt you could repair the MBR using a repair disc
Type 'Bootcfg /?' (minus the quotes) in the Start/Run line to see the commands available that way. Note that the /Rebuild command isn't available from inside Windows; you can only run that from within the Recovery Console. (That makes sense because you only need to totally rebuild the boot information when Windows won't start normally.)
A /List command is also available only from within Recovery Console. It simply lists the entries already in the boot list, which can be useful for checking or as a learning tool.
My suggestion to everybody who wants to play around with Linux and see what it is all about, USE VIRTUALIZATION software.
I've lost count of the number of times that I've seen a Windows user who wants to play with Linux, who puts it onto their machine as a dual boot, and ultimately finds out just how different it is, and then quickly decides it's not for them and wants it removed. And the problem is always that Grub is the bootloader now. You don't run into these issues when you run in a virtual machine.
For somebody like me, who supports Windows and Linux, I want a dual boot on my laptop. And I'm 100 happy with having Grub as my bootloader. It's never caused me an issue, and I won't be deciding that I don't want Linux on my laptop anymore.
I don't want this to sound harsh...but please consider running a virtual machine when you want to try Linux and don't immediately jump to dual booting. I know lots of people scoff at virtualization because they cannot do the fancy whiz-bang compiz graphics stuff in a virtual environment. But I'll be honest, if you are new to Linux....you likely aren't going to stick around long enough to get the fancy graphical stuff going anyway. Just sayin
this is what you want in the snapshot
Startup Repair: frequently asked questions http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...sked-questions
Start your computer from a Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...SB-flash-drive
Thank you. I already got this CD. It is what I meant with Recovery-CD from USB (since there is no cd-drive in the machine I had to put it onto USB). I already tried the 'Startup-Repair', but it did not help. It said that there was an error in the partition table, and it was corrected. Did not help, though. Then I tried the command prompt with bootsect, diskpart and bootrec with the corresponding options from the tutorial. But with /fixboot it always says 'element not found'.
Edit: 'bootcfg /query' (the list command you mentioned above) responds
'ERROR: Cannot open BOOT.INI file.'
have you a live cd with ubuntu on by any chance? and know a friend with a external cd/dvd drive you can borrow? so you can boot from the disc live into ubuntu?
No. But I got another USB-Stick and I will try to get Linux Mint onto it, because I still have the Image on an external HDD and I know it works out of the box with WLAN etc.
because if you can get into windows with linux you possibly will be able to repair it
Ok, got a working Linux Mint Live USB-Stick. What should I do now?
boot from the stick and see if you can see the drive that has windows 7 on to start off
Yes, I can see all drives which were there before with just Win7 on the system. They are all mounted. Except the 100MB hidden partition Win 7 creates during installation, but I can see even that with GParted.
im wondering if you can partition the 100Mb again and import the boot file we need some help here i will email another guru if you could get the recovery disc to work it would be easier i have asked for brinks advice ok, watch this space.
I got the Recovery CD from neosmart.net working (via USB)!
No, I do not know how.
so when you boot from the usb whats windows giving you in the way of options is these in the screenshot?
Click on 'Repair Your Computer' to gain access to the System Recovery window. Now choose 'Command Prompt' in order to run the desired utility which is called 'bootsect.exe'. Bootsect is located inside the boot folder so change your directory to boot. Now run ' bootsect /nt60 C: ' if you had Win 7 initially installed in the C partition. Alternatively, you can run ' bootsect /nt60 SYS ' or ' bootsect /nt60 ALL ' to repair the system partition or all partitions. Eject the thumb drive and restart computer. Your computer should now boot Win 7 again.

great advice from theog
Yes, I tried that multiple times. But it did not help. I suppose I bugged something with changing the active partition earlier. I do not even know which one has to be active: C:Windows or the 100mb 'system-reserved' partition. And should I be able to see the 100mb partition in diskpart and have a drive letter assigned to it or not?
here is another option to try SystemRescueCd
Description:
SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It requires no installation. It can be used on linux servers, linux desktops or windows boxes. The kernel supports the important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs). LINK SystemRescueCd
can you not reinstall linux on the hard drive with windows? and let the grub get the drive bootable then repair windows ? when you have a ubuntu distro installed you could download startup manager for ubuntu and you can change the boot order
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/StartUpManager
download StartUp-Manager Download StartUp-Manager software for free at SourceForge.net
StartUp-Manager is a free open-source GUI tool to manage settings for Grub (Grub Legacy), Grub 2, Usplash and Splashy. It provides a menu-driven interface which allows the user to set boot menu options such as the default operating system, menu timeouts and displays, password protection and much more. StartUp-Manager accomplishes this by translating the user's GUI inputs into bootloader settings without the need to manually edit the bootloader file (in Ubuntu, normally /boot/grub/menu.lst).
don't forget MBRWizard i posted in post 8 that's a option to look at.
Iphone 3.0 Download I tried startupmanager, but it says:
I will try reinstalling Mint to the external HDD, as there is nothing to lose on that (There was only Mint on it before, nothing else).
okey dokey i might not be able to reply to often im working in office, but you are trying the options well done
That does not work. Linux Mint does not start from (external) HDD. Only the 'live' version via USB-stick. I even tried repartitioning and reformatting the (external) HDD. There must be something on the (internal) Win7 HDD, which prevents Mint from booting, I suppose.
Here's an idea, if you don't mind losing mint (you said there was nothing to lose right?)
It seems to me that Windows isn't booting because it can't find the BCD, so what about if we force Windows to create a new one.
If you can get into Mint using the Live USB, then use GParted to create a new (small, 25-30GB or so) empty partition. WHile your here, if you can see your 100MB system partition, then delete that as well.
Install Windows onto the new partition, and allow it to create a new MBR and BCD. (100MB partition etc.)
Once you have access to the new install use EasyBCD to add the old Windows Install to the boot menu.
Remove the new Windows install from the bootmenu and delete the partition,
Reinstall Mint.
It's a long assed way to do it, but it might just work.
Good idea, but my max. USB-Stick is 4gb and there is no way to put the Win7-CD on it. The 8GB-Stick I used to install Win7 from broke!
Edit: Ok, Win7-DVD-Image is 3.0 GB. Just gotta figure out, how to get it on USB and bootable in LM10.
Woohoo. Finally I got my Win7 back.
Here is the solution: I put Win7-DVD on the 4GB-USB-Stick and started the installation (unfortunately to a wrong partition, because there was too less free space on C: and I did not want to erase that for obvious reasons). After the first installation step (copying files) I let it 'extracting files' a little bit, then just hit the reset key. Then I used the USB-Stick to start recovery and now it found the OLD Win7 installation on drive E:. Obviously the drive letters were changed due to the new installation of Win7 was on E: and I suppose it made itself C:.
So I let startuprepair repair everything automatically and rebooted without USB-Stick and Win7 (old) was there again. This time on drive C:.
Remaining problems:
1) I have to specify the 120GB HDD as first boot device in bios, although the Win7 partition is on the 80GB HDD. If I use the 80GB HDD as first device, (broken) Grub is loaded.
2) The formerly hidden 100MB partition is now drive H: on my Desktop. I want it to be like it was before. I suppose the bootmgr should be on that, but I do not know what Win7 created that partition for.
How do I solve those 2 problems?
go in to windows msconfig (type it in start menu, click on it in result, go to boot tab click on it and look at the settings. remove linux if you want but remember you cant boot into it after if i remember correctly.
Nope. My msconfig looks exactly like yours (with a longer timeout).
This is kind of a shot in the dark, but there are sometimes bios settings related to usb booting and exactly what the system will allow to boot via usb. I don't know how complex your bios is, but it is worth a look. I have a older system that refuses to boot from sata unless you leave the windows disc in the dvd drive just because the bios is borked on it.
There are no USB-devices connected now. Both the 80 and 120GB are on IDE. And I suppose the bootmgr was installed to the 120gb-drive although win7 is on the 80gb. On the 80gb is still a (borked) grub, which I would like to 'overwrite' with the correct win7 bootmgr.
Please post a screenshot of windows disk management window.

Well there is the bootmgr editing tool.
BCDEDIT - Boot Configuration Data Store Editor
The Bcdedit.exe command-line tool modifies the boot configuration data store.
The boot configuration data store contains boot configuration parameters and
controls how the operating system is booted. These parameters were previously
in the Boot.ini file (in BIOS-based operating systems) or in the nonvolatile
RAM entries (in Extensible Firmware Interface-based operating systems). You can
use Bcdedit.exe to add, delete, edit, and append entries in the boot
configuration data store.
For detailed command and option information, type bcdedit.exe /? . For
example, to display detailed information about the /createstore command, type:
bcdedit.exe /? /createstore
For an alphabetical list of topics in this help file, run 'bcdedit /? TOPICS'.
Commands that operate on a store
/createstore Creates a new and empty boot configuration data store.
/export Exports the contents of the system store to a file. This file
can be used later to restore the state of the system store.
/import Restores the state of the system store using a backup file
created with the /export command.
/sysstore Sets the system store device (only affects EFI systems, does
not persist across reboots, and is only used in cases where
the system store device is ambiguous).
Commands that operate on entries in a store
/copy Makes copies of entries in the store.
/create Creates new entries in the store.
/delete Deletes entries from the store.
/mirror Creates mirror of entries in the store.
Run bcdedit /? ID for information about identifiers used by these commands.
Commands that operate on entry options
/deletevalue Deletes entry options from the store.
/set Sets entry option values in the store.
Run bcdedit /? TYPES for a list of datatypes used by these commands.
Run bcdedit /? FORMATS for a list of valid data formats.
Commands that control output
/enum Lists entries in the store.
/v Command-line option that displays entry identifiers in full,
rather than using names for well-known identifiers.
Use /v by itself as a command to display entry identifiers
in full for the ACTIVE type.
Running 'bcdedit' by itself is equivalent to running 'bcdedit /enum ACTIVE'.
Commands that control the boot manager
/bootsequence Sets the one-time boot sequence for the boot manager.
/default Sets the default entry that the boot manager will use.
/displayorder Sets the order in which the boot manager displays the
multiboot menu.
/timeout Sets the boot manager time-out value.
/toolsdisplayorder Sets the order in which the boot manager displays
the tools menu.
Commands that control Emergency Management Services for a boot application
/bootems Enables or disables Emergency Management Services
for a boot application.
/ems Enables or disables Emergency Management Services for an
operating system entry.
/emssettings Sets the global Emergency Management Services parameters.
Command that control debugging
/bootdebug Enables or disables boot debugging for a boot application.
/dbgsettings Sets the global debugger parameters.
/debug Enables or disables kernel debugging for an operating system
entry.
/hypervisorsettings Sets the hypervisor parameters.
